Mexico City, July 31, 2014.-
The 2nd International Environmental Film Festival(FINCA) was held during the week of July 23 to 30 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The independent
feature documentary Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians, directed by Hernan Vilchez,, whose world premiere was held at Real de Catorce on May 17, received the Audience Award at this second edition. Also received the Award from Signis Argentina Catholic Association for Communication.
In presenting the recognition the jury found that the documentary was awarded the prize “for their commitment to environmental protection and respect for indigenous peoples and its profound For its cinematic quality where perfect mastery of the audiovisual language stands out.” The director, Hernan Vilchez, received both awards on behalf of the entire production team of the film.
Finally, Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians received a Special Mention by the Jury, in the Feature Film Competition section. About this recognition it was noted that “the documentary highlights the resistance of the Wixárika people in their struggle to defend their sacred land against the advance of mining, often facilitated by corrupt interests. It has great merit as presenting a diverse cultural understanding of environmental issues through a journey into the cosmic view of the indigenous people and their particular way of understanding nature and their action for its preservation and of the human rights of indigenous peoples.”
As part of the second edition of the International Environmental Film Festival (FINCA), 29 films were presented (features, medium-length and short films), of which 14 titles were part of the Official Competition in the Mines and Petroleum, Food Sovereignty, Biodiversity and Sustainability, Waste and Pollution sections.
Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians is currently showing in theaters in Mexico City, showing at El Bicho Forum(Colima 268, Colonia Roma) every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of August at 21:00 h. Also it will be shown at Cinema Tonala (261 Tonala, Colonia Roma) Sunday Aug. 3, Thursday Aug. 7, Saturday Aug. 9, Friday Aug. 15 and Sunday Aug. 17 .
